Working with Young Children and Early Childhood Educators for Teaching Artists

While this workshop is free, advance registration is required.

This session, designed with the Teaching Artist in mind, will prepare Teaching Artists to work in early childhood classrooms, home daycares, and the like. Topics will include early childhood development, appropriate expectations for young children, planning for safe, fun, and engaging experiences for young learners, and collaborating with early childhood educators.

Learning Objectives:
● Teaching Artists will explore developmentally appropriate expectations for young learners
● Teaching Artists will learn tips and tricks for managing materials, spaces and activities in the early childhood setting
● Teaching Artists will have a chance to practice applying new knowledge and skills to their practice by developing lesson plans and/or curriculum for the ECE setting

Alexandra Turner, M.Ed. (she/her) is a teaching artist, professional development instructor, program director, and pre-doctoral fellow and Project RESILIENCY Scholar in Special Education: Social Emotional Behavioral Health and Inclusive Education, at the University of Vermont. Alexandra works with all ages in a variety of settings including public and private schools, preschools, galleries and community programs. In addition to residencies and workshops for students and community members, Alexandra works with statewide organizations to develop and lead professional development workshops for teachers, Teaching Artists, after-school and early-childhood professionals. Alexandra was an early childhood classroom teacher for over 5 years in Burlington, Vermont. She brings over ten years of experience in teaching artistry in the early childhood setting, as well as across the lifespan. Alexandra holds a BA in Studio Arts and an M.Ed. in Arts in Education.

Instructor: Penny Hewitt

Enjoy the simple pleasure of creating a decoration or gift from materials responsibly harvested in Vermont. Utilizing techniques common to the Scandinavian and Russian styles of basketry, you will craft birds and stars using strips of inner bark from the paper birch, and also learn how these materials are harvested and prepared. Penny Hewitt’s workshops sell out quickly, so register early!

 

Workshop fee: $75 (10% discount for Catamount Arts members.) In addition, please bring a $30 materials fee, in cash or a check payable to the instructor, Penny Hewitt. Scholarship funds are available for high school students; please call Anne at 802-748-2600 ext. 109 for details.

A craftsperson, teacher, homesteader, and homeschooling mom, Penny Hewitt lives with her family on a diversified farm in the Northeast Kingdom. Working with responsibly harvested and hand-processed materials from the forest surrounding her home, Penny seeks to create objects of beauty that are useful in everyday life. She is inspired by traditions of other cultures, and grateful for the opportunities of connection to people, place, nature, and self that her craft cultivates. Her experience with weaving includes teaching workshops, leading homeschool groups, and crafting for income.
